The spiritual season of Advent begins tomorrow, on December 2. Advent is the beginning of the Christian church calendar, a time of preparation in which we prepare for the God to once again be born into our heart, our life.
This season is often covered up in all the carols and gift buying and feasting. But even as we hurry to decorate our tree or write Christmas cards, we often feel a longing, a sense that this should mean more. Maybe that is why you are reading these words right now, because you long to connect with the true meaning of Christmas.
Quaker writer Thomas Kelly wrote, “Over the margins of life comes a whisper, a faint call, a premonition of richer living. . .We have hints that there is a way of life vastly richer and deeper than all this hurried existence, a life of unhurried serenity and peace and power.” Take a moment to center yourself in unhurried serenity. Feel its peace and power. Allow yourself to return to this feeling as often as you need to during your day, during Advent.
