Hearing The Word
The Bible shows God the Creator speaking the world into being. God says “light,” and there is light. The gospel of John makes a startling claim—that the Word of God became flesh, and lived among humanity as Jesus of Nazareth. The Hebrew concept for “word” also means thought, or message. So we might say the message of God became the messenger. We believe that each human bearing the divine likeness is also a word made flesh, a word spoken forth by God for the sake of the world. At Westminster, we try to honor the word among us. We study scripture together, we pray (sometimes with words, sometimes without) and we try to make our community life one in which we speak to one another with honesty and respect, honoring the Word behind our words.
